My Holiday in North Korea: The Funniest/Worst Place on Earth by Wendy E. Simmons, Rosettabooks – on our shelves now
This is the most unusual book about a visit to North Korea that I have ever read. It’s an extremely humorous book about trying to understand what is perhaps the world’s most horrible state. The author compares incidents from her time in North Korea to parts of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and it is this comparison along with a lightness of writing style that brings the starkness of life in North Kore alive. There are so many Big Lies that create North Korean society, both political or cultural, and underneath the lightness of the author’s story there is a sense of dread. There is a saltiness to the writing style that fits the book perfectly. The author’s personal photos are also perfect for the content. This is a little sleeper that deserves more attention than it will get.
